Tips on Moving with Dogs and Puppies

Moving from one home to another can be just as stressful for dogs and puppies as it is for people.

But there are ways to reduce the amount of stress your pets go through, and the American Moving and Storage Association has a list of tips to make the move smoother for household animals.

 Among the things to remember:

  • Pets often become frightened and may try to run away, so keep your dog or puppy on a leash when outside and make sure she wears an ID tag, with her name, your name, and your cell phone number. This way, if she gets lost, a good Samaritan can reach you whether you’re still at your old home or at your new one.
  • Dogs and puppies cannot be shipped on moving vans and, except seeing-eye dogs, they aren’t permitted on buses or trains.
  • If your move is across state lines, call or write to the state veterinarian, state department of animal husbandry or other appropriate authority. Interstate health certificates must be obtained for dogs prior to entering most states, and all but four states require a rabies vaccine for dogs.
  • Some dogs and puppies must have an entry permit issued by the destination state’s regulatory agency. A few have border inspection of all animals being transported; others have random inspections. Local communities have pet control and licensing ordinances. In some cases, the number of pets is limited.

For more tips on how to plan your move, consult the American Moving and Storage Association website, http://www.moving.org/ .
